Women’s Dallas Cowboys Dez Bryant Nike Navy Blue Game #88 Jersey

Dez Bryant has squared off against two outstanding cornerbacks the first two weeks in Janoris Jenkins and Aqib Talib. But he might be facing the best Monday night in six-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett called Peterson an “incredible athlete” with “stickiness as a cover guy.”

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott agreed with that assessment.

“He’s a Pro Bowler every year he’s been in the league and there’s a reason for that,” Prescott said. “He’s around his guy and he covers his guy in tight windows, puts them in a phone booth no matter who he’s on. He’s one of the best corners in the league, so I’m excited for this matchup.”

In Dallas’ two games against the Cardinals since Peterson has been on the team, Bryant has caught a total of 10 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Larry Fitzgerald vs. Jason Witten

They won’t be playing against each other, but their contributions to the game have been about as significant as it gets. When looking at the list of the NFL’s all-time receptions leaders, Jerry Rice (1,549) and Tony Gonzalez (1,325) are the only names ahead of Larry Fitzgerald (1,134) and Jason Witten (1,106).

Witten is in his 15th season. Fitzgerald his 14th. Not many games will be played this year where basically two locks for the Pro Football Hall of Fame are both involved. And the talent is still there. Witten leads all NFL players with 17 receptions through two games. Fitzgerald is coming off back to back 1,000-yard seasons.

But their ability to stay healthy might be even more impressive.

“Two guys that are Walter Payton Men of the Year. They’re those types of guys for a reason,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. “I believe in karma. When you treat people like those two do, good things happen to you. And health has been blessed on both of them. Long careers and they just maintain it.”

Cowboys vs. adversity

The Cowboys haven’t suffered a loss as lopsided as Sunday in Denver since the New Orleans Saints defeated them 49-17 in Week 10 of the 2013 season. At that time, Prescott was a sophomore at Mississippi State and Ezekiel Elliott was a freshman at Ohio State. Dallas’ worst loss last season with Prescott and Elliott on the field was by three points. So how will they rebound?

“I’m definitely confident,” Prescott said Thursday. “We’ve had bad practices and the way we’ve come back after bad practices. It was one day and it was a bad day for us. We know that and we all addressed that, accepted that and take responsibility. But I’m excited for these guys to come back because I know how confident we all will be and how we were at practice today and how we will be for the rest of the week going into that game Monday.”

Fitzgerald was asked Thursday what advice he’d give to young players like Prescott and Elliott after experiencing  their most humbling day in the NFL.

“I would say they are damn lucky,” Fitzgerald said. “It took them 18 regular season games to be humbled. That’s a long stretch. I got my humble pie Week 2 of my rookie year. It happened a few more times during my rookie season. So I would say that those guys are blessed to say they got all the way to their second year [before having been] served humble pie.”

Dallas Cowboys Jason Witten

Jason Witten has done just about everything in his 15 years with the Dallas Cowboys, but two weeks into the 2017 season, he is on pace to do something even he never has: leading the league in receptions.

Witten is on pace for a staggering 136 catches this season. That would tie him with Brown and Julio Jones for the second most in NFL history regardless of position, trailing only the 143 catches posted by Marvin Harrison in 2002. While that pace is unlikely sustainable over the full season, the current record for a tight end belongs to Witten at 110 catches in a season. He is set the shatter that total in 2017.

And one last feather in Witten’s cap? According to Pro-Football Reference, no tight end above the age of 30 has ever caught 100 passes in a season. Witten could be the first, and he’s 35. Even well past his supposed prime, Witten continues to prove doubters wrong and cement his place in Canton.

Does the Dallas Cowboys’ embarrassing defeat in Denver have you worried?

Are you concerned it might mean they don’t have what it takes to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years?

Relax. Their 42-17 loss to the Broncos might not mean much by the time the playoffs arrive.

Even the greatest Cowboys teams took it on the chin a few times.

Those 1990s Cowboys who won three Super Bowls in four seasons had some bad days. In 1992, they were pummeled by the Eagles 31-7 on October 5. Philadelphia went 11-5 that season so it wasn’t a pushover but Dallas finished 13-3 and started the ’90s dynasty with a title.

In 1993, the Cowboys lost their first two games, including a 35-16 beating against the Redskins in Washington DC. This wasn’t a good Skins team, either. They finished 4-12. The next week Dallas lost at home to the Bills, 13-10. It was a rematch of the previous Super Bowl and the Cowboys were without Emmitt Smith for the second consecutive week. Later in the season, they lost to the Falcons in Atlanta after falling behind 20-0. The Falcons went 6-10. Dallas lost the next week on Thanksgiving to the Dolphins in the infamous Leon Lett fiasco. But they didn’t lose again en route to consecutive Super Bowl titles.

The Barry Switzer coached ’95 Cowboys Super Bowl winner lost four games, including three by seven or fewer points. The exception? A beatdown at home against the 49ers on November 12. San Francisco jumped out to a 17-0 lead and won 38-20.

Even some of those Cowboys’ vaunted ’70s Super Bowl teams laid some eggs every now and then. In 1970, they were blown out 54-13 in Minnesota and blanked 38-0 at home by the St. Louis Cardinals.

In ’71, they lost 24-14 in New Orleans to a Saints team that finished 4-8-2.

The ’77 Super Bowl champion Cowboys lost at home 24-17 to the Cardinals, who finished 7-7.

And as a reminder that teams can look different three months later, the ’78 Cowboys lost to the Rams 27-14 in Los Angeles but responded in the NFC title game later that season with a dominating 28-0 payback.
